Pointing and laughing

For the people who have screamed out about "catching a falling knife", I hear ya, really I do. But the uncertainty of living in a rental or buying at a (what we consider a reasonable price) greatly reduced (think early 2004) price in a superior school district at 6.5% interest on our loan really influenced our decision. We will be in a neighborhood that we love (even at night) with parks, superior schools and a grocery store within walking distance. The backyard has room for the swingset of doom. The guest room is sufficiently removed from the rest of the house so my mother in law doesn't have to listen to my children at odd hours of the day and night.

Which school district would that be? Since you seem to have done a lot of research, can you give some pointers on how to research a school district?

Well, in speaking of "district" I'm talking of the schools that serve this house particularly- because LAUSD isn't any prize, but the schools that serve this particular house are good. In our case, the schools and teachers for the grades we need have very good recommendations from friends and colleagues.

My dream too, yet hard to find on the Westside. Any hints on generally where?

Sounds like you got a reasonable price for the Westside, with overall indexes at early-2004 price levels.

Love your blog Westside (and really starting to get annoyed by Latesummer) we picked a house near the village in Pacific Palisades. We've been looking at it since for over a year, but the owners finally accepted our ridiculous offer. The house was actually listed for nearly TWICE what we will be paying at the top of the cycle.

Thanks, Maria, and my compliments on your success!

There's a lot to like in the Palisades, tempered most by the miles of traffic to get to other parts of greater L.A. But it keeps coming back on our short-list.

We just found the library, post office and our bank within walking distance too.

You could of got all the 'within walking distance' stuff and great schools....all in Santa Monica's Sunset Park area fr less than what you paid (i'll wager) in the Palisades.

Too many white people in SUVs up there anyway....

Bigger yards in the Palisades and fewer homeless than Sunset Park. Although in Sunset Park WORK would have been in walking distance
